Crowns

Restorative dentistry

A crown is a restoration sometimes known as a ‘cap’. It is made of porcelain, metal, gold or a combination of them all. It fits over a tooth that has been broken, weakened by decay or a large filling and makes it stronger, giving it the shape of a natural tooth.

The procedure involves shaping the tooth to a precise size, recording these dimensions and selecting a suitable shade. All of this information is sent to a highly skilled technician who will make a custom made crown.

It takes about 10 days for the crown to be made, in the mean time a temporary crown may be fitted.

Crowns are incredibly strong, good looking restorations. They must be kept clean with thorough tooth brushing and interdental cleaning to stop the tooth underneath from going bad or the gums around it from shrinking away.
